10,000 steps a day? Outdated according to the study! This is how much you should really go

In order to improve physical fitness, stay healthy and reduce the risk of disease, many try to stick to the promising 10,000 steps rule every day. According to a study, however, the optimal daily number of steps is completely different from what we always thought.

This is the number of steps you should actually take per day

The more you walk and exercise during the day, the better it is for the body. However, it does not necessarily have to be 10,000 steps, as was often assumed in the past, to benefit from health benefits. In a study, researchers have now come to the conclusion that people who take at least 7,000 steps a day are already doing something good for their health and can thus significantly reduce the risk of early death.

For the study, around 2,100 adults were observed over a longer period of time. It was found that the participants who walked at least 7,000 steps a day had a lower mortality rate over the years than those who took less than 7,000 steps a day. The walking speed did not play a role.

According to the study: 7,000 steps a day are enough

Should you be wondering if 10,000 steps compared to 7,000 steps might provide even more health benefits, the answer is rather no. The researchers found in studies that there is no real difference for our health whether we take, for example, 7,500 or 10,000 steps a day. Still, there is good news: 7,000 steps a day are much easier for us to achieve than hitting the 10,000 mark daily. So, with much less effort, we can still do something good for our body and health.

That’s where the 10,000-step myth comes from

Exciting: The myth that you should walk 10,000 steps a day is actually more of a marketing tool from the 60s. In 1964, the Japanese company Yamasa launched the “Manpo-kei”, the first portable pedometer. Translated, “Manpo-kei” means the 10,000-step meter – according to the manufacturer, this number is healthy and speaks for a healthy lifestyle. In the meantime, numerous studies refute the idea that 10,000 steps are necessary for a healthy lifestyle.
