TikTok Ban updates :TikTok ceases operations in the USA
Almost half of all Americans use TikTok. That’s over for the time being. The reason: The makers of the app are suspected of espionage because of their proximity to China and had to close. Now it’s up to Donald Trump.
Espionage Concerns Lead to TikTok Shutdown
TikTok was shut down in the USA on Saturday (local time) before a nationwide ban on the short video platform came into force. This cut off access to the app. Almost half of all Americans use the short video platform, which boosted small businesses and shaped online culture, especially in the USA.
Impact on American Users and Small Businesses
A law banning TikTok has been passed in the US. Unfortunately, this means that you will not be able to use TikTok for the time being. We are happy that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to allow TikTok back once he takes office. Please stay up to date, says a message on the app.
Legislation Behind the TikTok Ban
TikTok and the parent company ByteDance are suspected of espionage because of their proximity to the Chinese government. Therefore, the US Congress passed a law last year with a large bipartisan majority that obliges ByteDance to sell its US business by January 19. Service providers such as Apple, Alphabet’s Google or Oracle face massive fines if they continue to provide their services to Tiktok after the ban comes into force.
Trump’s Promise of a 90-Day Moratorium
US President-elect Donald Trump has promised TikTok a moratorium of 90 days. “The 90-day extension will most likely be granted because it is appropriate,” Trump told NBC in an interview. “If I decide to do so, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.” Donald Trump will then be sworn in as the 47th US president in Washington.
Uncertainty Surrounding the Legal Basis for Extension
However, the legal basis for a three-month postponement is unclear. According to the law, the US president can grant a 90-day extension of the deadline. However, the prerequisite for this is that there are promising sales negotiations. Bytedance and Tiktok have so far categorically refused to talk about a separation.
