TikTok Ban in USA

TikTok Ban in USA

December 6, 2024 – TikTok Ban in USA -Tiktok, one of the most used social media in the US, is in trouble. If ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, doesn’t divest its US operations by January 19, 2025 the app could be banned countrywide. This comes after a US federal appeals court upheld the divestment law citing national security concerns over Chinese influence on the app.

National Security

The court’s decision is based on the fear that Tiktok, under Chinese control, could be a threat to US national security. US officials worry the app could be used by the Chinese government to collect user data or spread propaganda. ByteDance and China have denied these claims, saying Tiktok operates independently.

TikTok’s data collection is the main issue. The app collects a ton of information, including user locations, browsing history and personal preferences. The concern is that this data could be accessed by the Chinese government, which is why US lawmakers are taking action to protect citizens’ privacy and national interests.

Legal Battles and Political Reactions

TikTok will appeal to the Supreme Court. This has gotten a lot of attention especially with President-elect Donald Trump now opposing the ban despite previously supporting it. Trump says a ban would be unfair to TikTok’s competitors, like Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

David Sacks, Trump’s new tech policy advisor, is calling the decision an overreach by the government. But supporters of the ban say it’s a necessary step to protect US national security and user data privacy.

The appeal will be a big deal, setting precedents for how the US handles foreign owned tech companies. Legal experts expect a messy battle with arguments around national security, economic impact and free speech.
