Trudeau as ‘Governor’ of Canada?
Recently, Donald Trump, the incoming president, mocked Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau as ‘Governor’ of Canada on Truth Social by calling him the “Governor of the Great State of Canada.” After winning the 2024 election last month, Donald Trump publicly stated in a recent interview with NBC News that Mexico & Canada could integrate as the 51st or 52nd USA states if they want to maintain the substantial financial support they receive from Washington in the form of tariffs. This was his first time appearing on a so-called Sunday talk show. In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump stated last month that unless Canada and Mexico take steps to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States, he would impose a 25 percent tax on all exports from those countries.
He defended his tariff position by pointing out that the United States provides Mexico with annual subsidies of 300 billion and 100 billion respectively, and that we give Canada more than 100 billion in subsidies annually. While Mexico receives roughly 300 billion in subsidies from the United States, why are we providing these countries with subsidies when we shouldn’t? Trump said that if we are funding them, he wants them to become a state of the United States.
Trudeau as ‘Governor’ of Canada
When Donald Trump met with Justin Trudeau earlier this month at his Mar-a-Lago Florida home, he reportedly expressed concerns that the Canadian economy would be negatively impacted by the high tariffs that Trump had proposed. In response, Trump joked that with Trudeau as ‘Governor’ of Canada, it might become the 51st US state to avoid these tariffs. He continued by saying that Canada may even be divided into two states: a conservative state and a liberal one. Trump assured that he plans to follow through on his promise as soon as he returns to the White House on January 20, 2025.
Representatives for Trump and Trudeau as ‘Governor’ of Canada did not respond to Fox News requests for comment without providing specifics. It was reported that Trudeau and other dinner guests laughed nervously at the remark. After the dinner, Trudeau informed reporters that he had a great conversation with Trump. Later, Trump described his talk with Justin as positive and said that the Canadian Prime Minister had promised to work with the next US government on Trump’s key priorities. He did not bring up his earlier pledge to raise tariffs.
